On January 7, 1918, at New York’s Hippodrome Theater, an elephant was brought on stage and led into a large cabinet. The cabinet was turned around so that the audience could see there was no escape route. Suddenly, a stage pistol is shot into the air and the elephant simply disappears. Harry Houdini had just made an elephant vanish. THE VANISHING ELEPHANT explores the idea of censorship as an editing mechanism. It gathers several images that have been manipulated throughout history in order to eliminate or strengthen certain political position.
