Larry Achiampong Untitled

Building from his previous projects Meh Mogya, More Mogya, Achiampong’s current research has continued the focus on audio and visual samples from the western region of the African continent, using his residency at the British Library (in association with Sound & Music's Embedded programme) as a platform for research and generating new ideas. Achiampong presented some of the new audio material at British library’s event Ghana Beats, inviting Sound & Music’s other Embedded resident, Aleks Kolkowski to reinterpret Achiampong’s audio work, using wax cylinder phonographs. As a result of this activity, Achiampong developed the 'Untitled' project into a vinyl, that amalgamates an original, synth-driven score on one side and a selection of field recordings (that the artist has amassed with the permission of Christ Reformed Church in Peckham and in partnership with South London Gallery) on the other. Some of this audio is also featured in Achiampong's video work titled 'Sunday's Best'. Embedded is a Sound and Music composer and creative artist development programme, funded by The Esmée Fairbairn Foundation. Embedded places a selection of composers from a range of disciplines into extended relationships with leading national arts organisations. Embedded is a bespoke programme, providing practical hands-on experience and a range of significant creative opportunities. SLG Local is a long-term project which brings newly commissioned and existing contemporary art works, films, videos and installations from public and private collections to a broad range of social settings in the vicinity of the South London Gallery.
