Yellow Magic Orchestra Technodelic

The fifth YMO album, this one's from 1981 and is heavily loop/sample based - largely made on the LMD-649 - a hand-made alternative to the Fairlight. YMO’s Technodelic (1981) forms part of a classic electro-pop couplet along with its predecessor, BGM, also originally released the same year. At long last it’s given a very necessary repress, remastered from high res audio files of the original masters and cut to wax for the enjoyment of a new generation and no doubt replacing a few well-loved originals. Whereas BGM famously made extensive use of the TR-808 drum machine, on YMO’s fifth studio album they favoured a prescient, innovative set-up of custom-built samplers - which were much cheaper than the Fairlight CMI or Linn LM-1 - used to chop and loops samples of Indonesian kecak chanting, gamelan and factory noises, along with the TR-808 beats, prepared piano and bass guitar, rather than programmed basslines. Whether in the beguiling blend of chiming dissonance and pointillist rhythms on Neue Tanz or Seoul Music, in the sublime minimalist swerve of Gradated Grey, or the highly strung, accelerated funk of Key, the result is yet another vastly ahead-of-its-time template for so much music that would come in its wake.
