Mechatok’s cult brand of bright-eyed, bass-rooted dance-pop pulls up on Young with a definitive solo debut album after a decade as go-to producer for everyone from Drain Gang to Charli xcx, with drops on PAN and Lorenzo Senni’s Presto?! ‘Wide Awake’ is the (perhaps long overdue) debut LP by an artist whose clean-cut, HD vision of electronica has been a key point of reference to the whole new wave of hyperpop and cloudrap artists ranging from PC Music to Bladee and Kamixlo. After a decade as a leading, if fleeting, presence on the scene, the Berliner crystallises his sound in 11 songs kissed with sparing guest vocals by the likes of Ecco2k, F5VE, Tohji, and Isabella Lovestory, and finely toned as a flawless sort of contemporary dance-pop LP with its feet rooted in classic forms of synth-pop, UKG, and electro-house-trance. Last spotted in longform on 2020’s ‘Good Luck’ co-credited with Bladee, Mechatok now takes centre stage with a suite of mostly 3 minute tunes that play directly to expectations. The saw-toothed electro-house leads and kicks of ‘Expression on Your Face’ trades in a Swedish House Mafia-meets-Charli XCX stye of dance pop loaded with Bladee & Ecco2K, and ‘Don’t Say No’ leans to whisked J-pop dance with F5VE’s finely feathered vox, whilst the other vocal cuts fare better in the gooey mid-tempo disco bloops of ‘200’ ft. Tohji, and indie-disco pearl ‘She’s a Director’ with Isabella Lovestory. In solo mode they chisel exacting measures of hyper-contemporary pop in a lane shared by Two Shell and SOPHIE, variously frothing up minimal-to-maximal delicacies of pearlescent pop on ‘You Don’t Exist’, gossamer-touch dubstep on ‘Everything’, and floaty trance in ‘Virus Freestyle’, or snappy 2-step in ‘Addiction’, with his canniest touches coming into play on the electro-trance bop ‘House of Glass’, and YMO-esque melodic FM synthesis of ’Sunkiss.’
