Natty digi-dub frolics from Mermaid, a Japanese reggae dub and chamber music fiend, doubling down on his ’25 debut LP with 10 takes on Bach, Gossec, and trad Japanese songs inna dub style FFO Tapes, 7FO, Froid Dub, SKRS Intl., Disrupt. One up to their debut LP, ‘Dubmaid’, Mermaid’s 2nd set pairs ostensibly, mutually exclusive bedfellows under the same sheets on handfuls of bubblers defined by piquant melodies and ruggedest, sine wave-sculpted bass. The combo works a treat for those who like to dance between styles, across borders, registering big cuts in his ludicrous flip of ‘Air on a G String’, and a nice ’n easy version of Gossec’s C.18th work ‘Gavotte in D’, and a Japanese traditional ‘1st January’ named ‘New Year’ and strapped with bubbling bass, also teased out in wilder dub on ‘Long Ago’. DJs and dancers also need to test out the moon boot cosmic skank of ‘A Nap’, and the Tempo Riddim-riffing ‘Lucifer’. (Boomkat Product Review)
