Orcutt's got a real ear for the fried. His own material needs no introduction, but just dip into the Palilalia canon for a minute and you'll spot gear from Zoh Amba, Kris Gruda, Cyrus Pireh and Chuck Roth that expands the universe, retaining the very same level of intensity. 'Fuzzy Logic' is a welcome addition, a set of eccentric, skillfully executed variations that seems to live and die on Rupp's critical understanding of distortion itself. Of course, it doesn't even reference music that's traditionally distorted either, that would be far too easy. The veteran improvisor, who's played with Peter Brötzmann and John Zorn, among others, looks to flamenco, using its traditional elements like picados (the rapid single-note runs), arpeggios and rasgueados (rolling strums) to pull away from usual free improv expectations. His technique might be somewhat familiar - at the very least compatible to Bailey or Frith's - but the sound is completely novel. It's important to note at this point that 'Fuzzy Logic' isn't even trackable as flamenco for the most part. It might be truer to call it a distortion record, one that's been shaped by Rupp's obsession with effects pedals. And, always the contrarian, Rupp doesn't even use an effects pedal, achieving his toasty aesthetic by using a "sound-stretcher" and a loop pedal along with a small amp that's been specially modified to handle "maximum blow-out tone at low volumes." This fractured, fully toasted character is what sticks in our heads, really - there's little else like it. Sure, Rupp's runs and Carlos Montoya-goes-Jandek gestures are eye-catching, but it's his distortion wizardry that'll keep you gripped.
