Shapeshifting sonics from the North East of England, Jeans & Lifestyle’s debut “Tiresome” sees the duo bivouac across the past, present and future of British electronic music — arriving somewhere entirely their own. Formed by Lewis Thompson and Louis Clark, the Newcastle upon Tyne-based project compounds myriad influences into something singular. Twee indie songwriting and post-punk guitars intermingle with ’00s dubstep rhythms, sparkling synths and accents of electronica, cultivating an atmosphere that is at once unpredictable and familiar — anachronistic gestures that crystallise into something wholly distinct. Throughout “Tiresome”, the balance between abstraction and traditional structures is in flux. Juxtaposing the hedonistic stepper pulse of “Interrupted” with the vocal duet melancholia of “A Friend For Winter”, the album pirouettes between the allure of abandon and the pull of downhearted balladry. Ending on “Campfire Blues Guitar”, Jeans & Lifestyle cement their penchant for exquisitely crafted songs, introducing bombastic elements of classic Britpop swagger, albeit through an unequivocally contemporary lens.
